Tamworth Co-op is an independent consumer co-operative that operates 11 food stores in or around the Tamworth area. Founded in 1886, it prides itself on being one of the town’s best-loved businesses, and its motto is, “We’re local, we’re independent and we care.”
Having previously worked successfully with many other Co-op groups, the Volumatic team approached Tamworth Co-op to see if they could help solve their manual and inefficient cash processes and introduced them to two intelligent cash handling devices that would benefit their stores…
The Challenge
Tamworth Co-op were suffering from inefficient and labour-intensive daily cash processes that wasted their team’s valuable time instead of focusing on other important in-store tasks and the customer service they constantly pride themselves on.
Due to the recent rise in retail crime, the Co-op also wanted to improve security, with both shrinkage and external theft prevalent in some of their stores. Staff safety was also a concern they wanted to address, as the simple act of walking cash from POS to the back office left their team vulnerable to attack. With a BRC report in early 2025 showing that both retail crime and in-store violence have increased by 50% in the last year, Tamworth Co-op wanted a solution to help combat this worrying statistic.
Finally, like many retailers, they also often found themselves on the receiving end of many forged banknotes and wanted to address this problem, as it was impacting their bottom line.
The Solution
After meeting with Tamworth Co-op, the Volumatic team worked quickly to understand their pain points. Discovering they were concerned with the security of their cash and rising CiT costs, and as they had already invested in Volumatic’s CountEasy money counting scales and used them successfully for over a decade to remove the need for manual till drawer counting, they now needed to find an even more intelligent all-in-one solution to add to the mix – step forward the Volumatic CounterCache intelligent (CCi).
Tamworth Co-op agreed to a trial of the CCi in their largest store and was immediately impressed with the many benefits it brought to their store, and as soon as funding was approved, they rolled out the CCi to all tills at all of their stores. They also invested in CCi High-Security Enclosures for each of their CCi devices, which gave them the extra security they required with retail stores often being high-risk environments.

The Outcome
Very quickly, Tamworth Co-op discovered that both the CountEasy scales and the CCi solution offered them a consistent cash handling process across their entire estate. Whereas previously each store had followed a slightly different process, the Volumatic solutions streamlined everything, with each store noticing massive time savings and benefiting from no more manual cash counting or handling.
Each store would previously count their cash takings throughout the day, then at the end of the day, they would manually count their cash again, with their CiT company coming to collect the cash three times a week. The cash would then be taken to the Tamworth Co-op Head Office, to be counted again by their Finance person before being taken to the bank. This was a long-winded process with notes being touched multiple times, making it extremely inefficient and prone to discrepancies at times.
The CCi has helped them achieve all their cash handling aims as a business, overcoming manual processes, providing fewer cash touch points, eliminating counterfeits, offering more security, and ultimately saving Tamworth Co-op stores so much time. One of the main benefits of the CCi was also no longer having to walk cash across the shop floor, at great risk to the team, as now their CiT provider collects the pouches directly from their POS.
They were also impressed with the incredible customer service they received from the Volumatic team.
